I’m Oleksandr Kovalchuk, a fashion and editorial photographer based in Paris

I started taking photographs when I was fourteen. Over time, photography stopped being simply an interest and became my profession. I have now been doing it professionally for ten years. I still do not feel that I have exhausted the medium; there is always something I have not tried yet.

I’m originally from Kharkiv, Ukraine. Since 2022, I have lived and worked in Paris full-time. I had already come here for projects before moving, so the city was part of my work before I settled here.

What keeps me interested in fashion photography is how open the field is. One day the starting point is a face; another day it is a garment, a location, a movement or a particular light. The same elements never quite lead to the same photograph.

I like to treat photography as an art form, and I need room to experiment. But I also remember that the photographs are being made for someone. That freedom only works when the result is useful to the person or brand in front of my camera.

I have photographed during fashion weeks in Paris and Milan and worked on projects in Cannes during the festival. My images have appeared in Vogue, ELLE and L’Officiel. I also work with private clients, brands and teams from different countries. These contexts are very different, which is one of the reasons I value them: each asks for a different kind of attention.

Trust matters to me, and so does being someone people can rely on. I would rather show both through the way I handle a project than write a long paragraph about being professional.

I speak Ukrainian and Russian fluently, work in English and am learning French.

If you would like to discuss a project, you can contact me here.
